Building a Sense of Belonging

My Experience as Operations Manager for the Student Programming Board at CSU Channel Islands

As the previous Operations Manager for the California State University Channel Islands, Student Programming Board, I was entrusted with the critical responsibility of overseeing the day-to-day activities and logistical operations of the organization. I brought with me a wealth of experience and expertise, honed through years of working at Fairbrae Swim & Racquet Club's event planning, operations management, and leadership role. My passion for creating engaging and meaningful experiences for students made me a perfect fit for the dynamic and fast-paced environment of the Student Programming Board.

While I oversaw a diverse range of activities and events. These events range from the annual Dolphinpalooza festival, where hundreds of students come together for a day of music, food, and fun, to Karaoke night, where students belt out their favorite tunes, to movies under the stars, where students lounge on blankets and enjoy classic films. We took pride in spearheading cultural celebrations such as El Mercadito, where students could experience the vibrant colors, sounds, and tastes of LatinX culture.

In my role as Operations Manager, I worked closely with a team of talented and motivated student leaders to coordinate logistics, manage budgets, and market the events, while ensuring events ran smoothly and safely. I was able to leverage my previous experience as an on-deck supervisor and communication to develop processes and systems that allowed us to deliver top-notch events, week after week, month after month.

In addition to my work in operations management, I played a key role in developing and implementing strategic initiatives to enhance student engagement and involvement on campus. As a team, we collaborated with campus partners and community organizations to develop new programs and activities that fostered a sense of community and belonging among students. I was particularly proud of our work to establish a mentoring program through our General Board Meetings, allowing them to receive guidance, support, and advice on how to event plan.

Overall, I am humbled and honored to have played a role in shaping the vibrant and engaging campus community at California State University, Channel Islands. Through our leadership, dedication, and tireless work, we helped to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that empowered students to explore their passions, build new connections, and make the most of their college experience.

Shaping the Future of the Organization

Reflections on My Time on the Board of Directors & Elections Council

Board of Directors

Being a part of the Board of Directors and Elections Council has been an incredibly fulfilling experience for me. As a member of these groups, I have had the opportunity to work closely with other passionate and motivated individuals to help shape the direction of the organization and ensure that it operates in a fair, transparent, and effective manner.

As a member & Secretary of the Board of Directors, I was responsible for helping plan the future of the Associated Students Incorporated at Channel Islands. This involved monthly meetings we discussed and developed long-term plans, set priorities, and made critical decisions that would impact the future of ASI. I was also responsible for ensuring the financial health of the organization and made sure that it has the resources it needs to achieve its goals.

ASI Elections Council

As a former member of the Elections Council, the council played a crucial role in ensuring that our ASI student government elections were conducted in a fair and transparent manner. We took on this responsibility and help to build a culture of active participation within the organization.

As a part of the Elections Council, we met weekly to develop policies and procedures that ensured the integrity of the election process. This involved establishing clear rules and guidelines for nomination and campaigning, overseeing the voting process, and ensuring that all candidates and voters were treated with respect and fairness.

We played an active role in promoting the elections and encouraging members to participate. Through social media campaigns, posters, and other outreach efforts, we helped to raise awareness about the elections and the importance of voting. We also worked closely with the Board of Directors and other stakeholders to ensure that the election process was aligned with the ASI mission and goals.

Overall, my time on the Elections Council was rewarding. It allowed me to use my skills and expertise to make a positive impact on ASI. It also helped me to develop my leadership and organizational skills, like working collaboratively with other passionate and dedicated individuals toward a common goal.

Summary

Overall, being a part of the Board of Directors and Elections Council has allowed me to develop my leadership skills and make a positive impact on the organization. It has also given me the opportunity to work collaboratively with other passionate and motivated individuals who are dedicated to the organization's mission and goals. However, I also recognize that these roles come with significant responsibility and require a high level of commitment and dedication to the organization.
